Some smart home makers get accused of overloading their devices, but Zeeq actually has a bunch of useful gadgets in one crowdfunded device.
We all love a good night’s sleep. Usually, that is best done by leaving smart gadgets out of reach, turning off the TV or tablet and trying to think sweet thoughts. However, technology is now invading the bedroom, and this example might help us get a better rest.
The Zeeq is currently on Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2121327950/zeeq-smart-pillow-stream-music-stop-snoring-sleep?ref=nav_search) but was fully funded in just one day with over 1,000 orders. Which at least means if you get involved, you’re likely to get your pillow by the end of the year, as promised.

Using a smart foam, the pillow is comfortable to rest on, despite the battery and technology crammed into it. There’s also an antibacterial, washable cover. At the top of the feature list, it has a microphone that can detect if the sleeper is snoring, it can encourage them to change position by vibrating the speakers to aid restful sleep and shut up another source of nocturnal disturbance.
It will also track your sleep, how much you toss and turn and so it can provide a great deal of feedback via the app. There is a controller, attached via a sturdy and bed safe wire, with a volume control built in to adjust the music. There are eight speakers in total, embedded in a single foam enclosure, four facing up and four down – so it can be turned around.
The Zeeq’s speakers are cleverly located within the pillow, so that only someone resting on the pillow or very close to it can hear. Someone on the other side of the bed, shouldn’t hear a thing, whatever you’re playing via Bluetooth from your phone or Spotify playlist. That means you won’t fall asleep with headphones on, and once you’re asleep the music will fade away. It also has some restful sounds to help people relax and nod off.

The Sleep of the Zeeq

The battery should last a month between charges, and the dedicated app will show how well you are sleeping and let you and there’s an alarm to wake you up playing your choice of alert or music. The app works on iOS and Android app, showing how well you’ve slept over the week, which may give clues as to other lifestyle changes you might want to make.
Current pledges started at $149, and there’s every chance the that Zeeq could integrate with more smart home kit and literally be your bedside buddy without any wires or more gadgets in your room. The parent company behind the project is a bed maker, so they should know about the comfort required and will prioritize that over gizmos packed inside.
